So, i've just been poking around the farm on a nice little walk with my cameras. It was so fabulous! This is the quiet part of the day when a good deal of wildlife is taking its afternoon siesta and it was all peaceful and lovely. So, there i was just quietly toodling along the hillside after taking some nice pictures of some mushrooms and Indian Pipes and suddenly, bam! A red fox breaks cover not ten feet from me! He was too quick for me to get a picture, but, goddamn, what a rush!! I did, however, get some fabulous close-ups of this baby fence lizard. He was maybe all of two inches long and just sitting there on some leaves on the south face of the hill; I found him while i was picking pennyroyal.
Then, when i got down to the barnyard the copperhead had come back out of the pile of rocks and was sunning himself. Got some awesome close-ups of him, too. He's about two and a half feet long and has a very grey cast to his skin whereas most copperheads are more brownish. But he still has that lovely distinctive arrow-shaped coppery head and goldy-brown-copper eyes. Just gorgeous, lying there all coiled up, theoretically malicious.
Well, it's back to Morgantown tomorrow.....I hope to go do some poking around in the woods outside town looking for rattlesnakes. I'm wicked keen to get some good shots of some rattlers and i hear they are semi-common out around Cooper's Rock. Yay! I've never gotten to play with any rattlers yet and so i'm very excited at the idea. Oh boy, this is going to give my fiance the heebie-jeebies....he's not overly fond of reptiles especially the poisonous varieties and really doesn't understand my enthusiasm for them. Silly, silly boy.
I actually slept in until 7:30 this morning which was nice. Eh, pity about all the nightmares though. Oh well, i'll sleep when i'm dead, i suppose. *maniacal chuckling*

Poisonous snakes seem to be a lot more active here in the last few weeks...we've seen a dramatic upsurge in bite cases. Even had a cat that got one fang mark in her chest who actually died. Mostly we give them megadoses of Benadryl and steroids because the average pet owner can't afford the antivenin treatment.
